Piedmont and Northern Railroad
Yes folks the south did have an electric railroad. The rail line was built by Duke power in two states.
The South Carolina line ran from Belton to Spartanburg, it was begun in 1911 and was completed by 1914.
The line ran passenger trains until late in 1951, and by 1954 the line was dieselized. In 1967 the line was
bought by the Seaboard Coast Line, ans since then much of the line has been abandoned. One of the P&N's electric
locos #5103 resides in the NC Transpotation museum.
